Artesania Pachamama Two Day Sale

Friday, October 26 Noon - 5 PM Saturday, October 27 10AM - 4PM
Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse Regina Hall 5900 Delhi Pike

Greetings from Artesania Pachamama,

Artesania Pachamama ( Earth Mother), is a cooperative of native Peruvian women, who hand-knit beautiful alpaca and pima cotton sweaters, started by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, in Manazo, Puno, Peru, one of the poorest areas of the altiplano. The money they receive enables them to help support their families. We are asking help in promoting a two day sale of sweaters and other Peruvian handicrafts. All those helping with this sale are volunteers and all the money from the sale goes back to the cooperative. Any help you can give promoting the sale will be greatly appreciated. If you would like additional information and pictures of the cooperative we can provide them.

Thank you,
Cathy Colque

Judy Cook - Named one of Dayton's Top Ten Women

Oakwood Rotary member Judy Cook was honored as one of Dayton's Top Ten Women for 2005. Following is the speech she gave at the event.

I have long had a favorite adage: Bloom where you are planted. It speaks to me. I have found it an excellent guide, a good reminder, solace in difficult times, an aid in setting priorities, and a call to action. It is straight forward, simple, but says so much.

To bloom, one must come out of the shadows and into the light. Be inquisitive, informed-know, understand—and give. Each of us has something to give. That ‘something” can range from sophisticated knowledge and skills, to unique experiences, to plentiful assets, to passionate belief, to a giving spirit. All have value, all are needed. It is in giving that we bloom—move from spectator to participator, critic to enabler, concern to action, outsider to involved, from bud to bloom—a bloom that grows as we share with others, learn from others, move forward with others.

The opportunities for giving are endless. In fact, it is possible to spend sizeable amount of time and energy just searching for the perfect place to give. Perhaps a more efficient choice is to see the opportunities, the needs, staring us in the face and get to work. Often the most compelling needs, the ones we can best serve, are those near enough to touch. Turning away from the troublesome problems, purposely overlooking challenging needs and retreating to more pleasant milieus is a path understandably well trod. But as in most things, with the greatest effort comes the greatest rewards, There is often a purpose to the place we are planted and the best response is to dig in and make things grow.

In living my adage, the great surprise and joy is discovering the army of others in like pursuit. Our times abound with problems and challenges but I remain optimistic. Everywhere there are individuals, groups, organizations working towards solutions. Some do so with great sophistication, others are fumbling as beginners but all with determination and undaunted spirit—truly reason to rejoice.

When we take the next step by joining hands, overcoming barriers and stumbling blocks, even greater effectiveness and greater impact will result. When we do this, there is the opportunity for each of us to bloom right where we are planted, not alone, but in a sea of flowers.
